About San Nicolas Book Art

My Story

Welcome to San Nicolas Book Art. My name is Sandra Garcia, and I'm a book artist based out Seattle, WA. I use three different book binding techniques; long stitch for my soft bound journals, Coptic binding and full binding for my hardcover journals.

In 2006, I went on a book arts study abroad program to Siena, Italy. I learned the art of book binding and book arts in a small studio along with other students. It was there that I fell in love with the book arts. After college, I worked with a campus ministry and continued to create books on the side. Then in 2013, I was invited to sell my hand bound journals at Seattle's famous Pike Place Market. Shortly after, I started my small business where I create beautiful journals and books full time.

I'm always working on exciting and new ways to make my hand bound journals. When I'm not in my studio or at the market, I'm hanging out with my husband and beloved daughter.

Behind the Name

I had the chance to visit my grandparents in their hometown, San Nicolas, Pangasinan in the Philippines right after college. My visit was magical. We spent many days at their fish pond, cooking fresh tilapia and enjoying the view of the mountains. The land was passed down through generations and it is a place that meant a lot to my grandparents. My grandpa had a small cabana built over the fish pond, which is my logo. San Nicolas is my connection to my history and culture. It is my honor to name my business after their hometown.
